The Belcanto Story

Our Teachers

Helen - Head of Music & Drama

With a varied career spanning some 35 years, Helen has all manner of ‘hats’ that she has worn.  Since a young age she knew that she wanted to dance, however a major spinal operation put pay to that somewhat early in her career.  She then decided that teaching and passing on her knowledge and ideas was the best way forward and having gained all of her teaching qualifications, for many years she ran a highly successful performing arts school in Essex where she originally came from. In addition to this Helen has been involved in music in both private and state sector, having been Head of Department at two schools, and also Musical Director for various children’s production companies.  Not only having experience in teaching Helen has diversified into management and was involved in the setting up and co-running of an Essex based Theatrical Agency which represented artists performing on both stage and screen, some of their West End credits include the musicals Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, and Dear Evan Hansen (among many others).

Since relocating to Norfolk she now enjoys examining Dance, Drama and Singing for a UK based Accredited Examination Awarding Body and gets to travel around the UK and Europe visiting many different dance and performing arts schools.  She also currently MD’s for a relatively large children’s franchise which run weekend sessions for talented youngsters, and also undertakes some private and small group tuition for examinations and assessments.

Abbie - Head of Dance

Having been brought up with performing in her family it was inevitable that at some point Abbie would ‘tread the boards’ - and that she did from a fairly young age spending a year in the Children’s Ensemble for Joseph at London’s Adelphi Theatre starring Lee Mead, and then followed this up with three years as various roles in the acclaimed Billy Elliot the Musical at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre.

However, performing was not where Abbie saw herself in the future.  Following the family footsteps she decided that teaching was where she saw herself and she now finds herself as a highly sought after teacher freelancing for some of the larger local dance schools.

After she left school Abbie pursued her teaching training by attending the Royal Academy of Dance in London and undertook a BA Honours Degree in Ballet in Education and followed this up with a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Dance). She also holds many private teaching qualifications including Licentiate Status in Tap, Modern Jazz and Classical Ballet and Associate Status in Acro and Street Dance.

In addition to her teaching qualifications she has a vast knowledge of SEND teaching and works very closely with a local specialist school.
